21.07.2017 günü, saat 01:31'de Bodrum-Muğla merkezli bir deprem meydana gelmiştir. AFAD – TDVMS (Türkiye Deprem Veri Merkezi Sistemi)'nden alınan verilerle yapılan çözüm sonucu elde edilen büyüklük Mw= 6,5 olarak güncellenmiştir. Depremden hemen sonra büyüklükleri 1,8–5,0 arasında değişen 511 (22/07/2017- 10:00 itibariyle) artçı deprem meydana gelmiştir. Depremin merkez üssüne en yakın yerleşim yeri Muğla ilinin Bodrum ilçesine bağlı Merkez köyüne kuş uçuş uzaklığı 12,09 km'dir. 21.07.2017 (01:31) Muğla-Bodrum Depremi (Mw=6,5), deprem episantrına 9,87 ile 43,05 km uzaklıklardaki AFAD Türkiye Kuvvetli Yer Hareketi Gözlem ağına ait 22 adet ivme-ölçer istasyonu (ilk belirlemelere göre) tarafından kaydedilmiştir. Depremin dış merkezine 9,87 km uzaklıktaki en yakın istasyon Muğla-Bodrum istasyonu olup en yüksek ivme değerleri sırasıyla K-G bileşeninde 158,77 cm/sn2, D-B bileşeninde 102,01 cm/sn2 ve düşey bileşeninde 88,04 cm/sn2 olarak ölçülmüştür. Ayrıca, S dalga fazının K-G ve D-B bileşeninde 8,5 sn kaydedildiği gösterilmiştir. MTA diri fay haritasına (2012) göre, deprem episantrı yakınlarında bulunan önemli fay sistemleri Gökova Fay Zonu'dur. 21.07.2107 Gökova Körfezi açıklarında meydana gelen Mw=6,5 büyüklüğündeki deprem, Körfezi kuzeyden sınırlayan K82D-53GB eğimli normal fay üzerinde meydana gelmiştir. Deprem saati, yapısal hasarı belirleyen önemli parametrelerden biridir. Muğla-Bodrum istasyonunda imve değeri 158,78 cm/ sn2'den daha yüksek olduğu ve yaklaşık 11 saniye sürdüğü açıklanmıştır. Alan önemli sismik faaliyetlere ve karmaşık arıza sistemlerine sahiptir. Muğla-Bodrum istasyonundaki ivme kaydı, kuvvetli yer hareketi sismolojisi için çok önemlidir. Yer imve kaydı beklenen ampirik değerlerden daha yüksek olmasından dolayı, binalarda büyük zararlar meydana gelmiştir.
