ÖZET Birinci Haçlı Seferi'nin gerçekleştiği XI. asır sonunda İslâm dünyası olsun batı dünyası olsun yoğun bir istikrarsızlık içerisindeydi. Müslümanlar, iki mezhep ve bunların sayısız Arkalan içinde bölünmüş bir halde iktidar kavgası verirken, batı dünyası da benzer istikrarsızlık ve iç kavgaların ortasındaydı. Özellikle batı dünyasının bir kurtuluş arayışı içinde olduğunu belirtmek gerekir. Bu devrin sosyal yapısı batıda ve doğuda büyük ölçüde tarıma dayanmaktaydı. Verimli topraklar belirli kişilerin elindeydi ve insanların çok büyük bir kısmı bu toprak sahiplerine tâbi olarak yaşamak zorundaydı. Zira, az da olsa güvenliği, ellerinde mutlaka silahlı bir güç bulundurmak zorunda olan bu toprak sahipleri sağlıyordu. Şam topraklan da bütün verimini bu silahlı toprak sahiplerine vermekteydi. Doğu-batı ticaret yollannın tam ortasında yer alan ülke, iç kargaşalıklar sebebiyle bu zenginlikten hakça bir paylaşımla yararlanamıyordu. Tabi o devrin toplumsal şartlannı ve ikta düzenini de göz önünde bulundurmak gerekmektedir. Adaletin, kılıç sahiplerinin iki dudağı arasında olduğu bu dönemde ulema sınıfının yapabildiği, ancak onların merhamet duygulanın harekete geçirmeye çalışmaktan ibaretti. Bu şartlar altında, bölge insanlannın daimî surette bir iç mücadele ve en yoğun tehlikeler karşısmda bile büyük bir yılgınlık içinde olmasma şaşmamak gerekir. At the end of the XIth' century, when the First Crusades took place, the world of Islam and the West were in a period of great instability. The muslims, who were divided among two sects and innumerable groups attached to them, struggled for political power while the western world was in a similar unsteady state of internal strifes. Particularly the Western world was in a search for salvation. In this period, agriculture formed, to a great extent, the basis of the social structure in the West and the East. Fertile lands belanged to particular landlords and a majority of the people lived as their dependents. Although few in number, these landowners had to prossess arms and established security. These armed landowners fully benefited from the fertile lands of Syrie. Although this land was situated right at the intersection of the eastern and western trade routes, the people of the land could not share the wealth equally due to internal disorders. Naturally, one also has to consider the social conditions of that period and the land system (Iqta'). Since the administration of justice rested on the words of the sword-bearing rulers, what the ulema class could do was to try and influence these rulers to act with mercy. Under these conditions, the people of the region always engaged in continuous internal strifes and, not surprisingly, they were in a state of great dismay facing even the most terrifying dangers. In the above paragraphs the reader will find a summary of the general contents and the main theme of what is told in the following pages. The rest of this thesis is an account of the geographical structure, commercial goods and agricultural products of the region, as well as an evaluation of the revenues obtained from trade and agriculture. vui
