Swap piyasası uluslararası fînansal piyasalara yeni katılmıştır ve hızlı bir şekilde büyümüştür. Swap piyasasının yoğun olarak işlemeye başlaması 1980'lerin başında gerçekleşmiştir. Swap, iki taraf arasında bir sözleşmedir. Bu sözleşmeyle taraflar belirli bir parayı belirli ödeme koşullarında diğeriyle takas ederler. Faiz swapi, döviz swapi, aktif swap ve mal swapi olmak üzere dört çeşit swap bulunmaktadır. Bunlar içersinde faiz ve döviz swaplan uygulamada en çok görülenidir. Faiz swapi, sabit faizli borç almış bir tarafin bu borcun faizlerini değişken faizli borç temin etmiş başka bir firmanın borcu ile belirli bir süre değiştirme anlayışına dayanır. Döviz swapi ise, farklı dövizlerden olan borçların vade tarihinde orjinal para birimleri üzerinden ve önceden anlaşılmış belirli bir kur hesabıyla geri ödenmek üzere değiştirilmesidir. Faiz swapinda yalnızca faiz ödemeleri takas yapılır, döviz swaplannda ise hem faiz ödemeleri, hem de anapara ödemeleri gerçekleştirilir. Swaplar ekonomik olarak üç amaçla yapılır. Bunlar, risk paylaşımı, arbitraj ve pazar tamamlama veya pazarda fon bulmadır. Swaplar, alınan borcun net maliyetini düşürebilir. Ayrıca döviz ve faiz riskinin düşük maliyette olmasını sağlayabilir. Bazı durumlarda swap pazarda uygun şartlarda fon bulmak amacıyla yapılır. Bu çalışmada döviz swaplan üzerinde yoğunlaşılacaktır. Temel olarak dört çeşit döviz swapi vardır. Bunlar, sabit faizden sabit faize, sabit faizden değişken faize, değişken faizden değişken faize ve aynı para birimi üzerinden yapılan değişken faizden değişken faize para (döviz) swapidir. Döviz swapi ülkemizde uygulanmaktadır. Swaplar, yeni bir türev aracı olarak ülkemiz için önemlidir. Dış borçların maliyetinin düşürülmesine yardımcı olur. Türkiye, değişik yabancı paralarla uygun faiz oranlan içersinde borçlanabilir. Swaplar, spekülasyon amacıyla kullanıldığı gibi muhtemel zararlan ortadan kaldırmak ya da borç maliyetini asgariye indirmek amacıyla da kullanılabilir.
CURRENCY SWAPS and APPLICATIONS KEYWORDS: Swap, currency swap, interest rate swap. The market for swaps is the most recent addition to the international financial markets. The Swap market began extensively in the early 1980s. The market has grown to enormous proportious. Swap is a contract or an agreement whereby two parties agree to exchange periodic payments. A swap agreement commits each party to exchange an amount of funds, determined by a formula, at regular intervals until the swap expires. There are four types of swaps: interest rate swaps, currency swaps, asset swap and commodity swap. Interest rate swaps and currency swaps are used commonly in the world. In an interest rate swap, the parties swap payments in the same currency based on an interest rate. For example, one of the parties can pay a fixed interest rate and the other party a floating interest rate. In a currency swap, two parties agree to swap payments based on different currency. Li an interest rate swap, only interest payments are exchanged. In a currency swap, there is an exchange of both interest and principal. Swaps can be economically interpreted in one of three ways. These are risk sharing, arbitrage and market completion. Swaps could reduce the net cost of borrowing. Swaps are also used to manage currency and interest rate risks at lower costs. Swaps in some cases developed as a response to market segmentation and other barriers. In this study we consentrated on the currency swaps. There are mainly four types of curreny swaps: Fixed to fixed currency swap, cross currency fixed to flexible rate swap, floating to floating currency swap and some currency floating to floating currency swap. Currency swaps are used in Turkey. Swaps are a new derivative instrument and very important for Turkey. They can help reducing the foreign debts. Turkey can easly borrows funds in different currencies with convenient interest rate. Swaps can be used to speculate, to hedge an exposure or to lower borrowing costs.
