İngilizce'nin mevcut konumu, dünya nüfusunun önemli bir kısmını İngilizce'yi kullanan yada öğrenen durumuna getirmiştir. Yabancı ve ikinci dil olarak İngilizce'nin öğretilmesi uluslararası dev bir ticari sektöre dönüşmüştür. Gittikçe artan bir şekilde İngilizce, basılı bilgilerin uluslararası dili olmağa başlamıştır. Dünyadaki bilimsel, ticari, ekonomik, teknolojik ve diğer alanlarla ilgili bilgiler, farklı milletlerden yazarlar tarafından yazılsa bile İngilizce yazılıp basılmaktadır. Kısaca dünya üzerinde İngilizce, ortak dil olarak çok önemli bir fonksiyon üstlenmiştir. Yabancı dil olarak İngilizce'ye duyulan bu ihtiyaç, birçok ülkenin eğitim kaynaklan üzerinde ciddi baskılar oluşturmuştur ve İngilizce'nin öğretimi ile ilgili problemler dünya üzerinde tartışılmağa başlanmıştır. Bu öneme istinaden SAÜ İngilizce hazırlık sınıflan açarak dil öğretimine başlamıştır. Bu tez, bu dil öğretim programını değerlendirmek ve aksayan yönlerini göstermek ve bu dil öğretimine yardımcı olmak amacı ile hazırlanmıştır. Bu araştırma, SAÜ Mühendislik Fakültesi İngilizce hazırlık sınıflan ile sınırlandınlmıştır. Bu çalışmada bilgiler, öğrencilere ve öğretim elemanlanna uygulanan anketler ve görüşmeler ile toplanmıştır. Aynca bu alanla ilgili literatür taranmıştır. Bu hazırlık sınıflan ile ilgili kendi içgözlemlerimiz de burada yansıtılmağa çalışılmıştır. Aynca bu tez içersinde dil öğretiminin, sadece sınıfta başlayıp biten bir süreç olmadığı; aksine öğretim boyutunun yanında sosyokültürel, dilbilimsel, psikolinguistiksel yönleri olan çok kompleks bir süreç olduğu vurgulanmağa çalışılmıştır. Bu süreçte sosyoloji, psikoloji ve güzel sanatlann, önemli olduğu ve bir dil öğretim programı hazırlanırken, bunlann dikkate alınmasının gerekliliği gösterilmiştir. Bu programın değerlendirilmesi sonucunda ortaya çıkan veriler, bu dil öğretim programının hedeflenen başarıya ulaşmadığını göstermiştir. Bu program, öğrenci, öğretim elemam, materyal ve yöntem olmak üzere dört boyut altında incelenmeğe çalışılmıştır. Veriler, dört boyutta da ciddi problemlerin olduğunu göstermiştir.
The current status of English has turned a significant percentage of the world's population into part time users or learners of English. The teaching of English as a foreign language is a major international enterprise. Increasingly English is becoming the major international language of printed information. A great deal of the world's scientific, commercial, economic and technological knowledge is written and published in English, though the writers may be Turks, Danes, Dutches and so on. Publication in English ensures the widest possible readership for new findings and ideas. English is also an important language for the dissemination of news around the world. These make English teaching and learning important. The widespread need for English as a second or foreign language puts a considerable pressure on the educational resources of many countries. Problems relating to the teaching of English are discussed the world over. Language teaching is not a procedure that begins and ends in the language classroom. Language teaching is a complex issue, encompassing sociocultural, linguistic, psycholinguistic, as well as curricula and instructional dimensions. Language teaching operates in the fields of education, applied linguistics, sociology, psychology and modern arts simultaneously. Finally this is a study that attempts to be interdisciplinary and it cannot operate within the work of any single discipline. The University of Sakarya begins offering its students English to improve their command of English, provide career development for its students and respond to the current needs and expectations of its students under the name of prep school. The impact of the program has never been assessed up to now. So the thesis is prepared to evaluate the results of language teaching at SAÜ and monitor the negative results of the procedure and help the authorities of the university to solve the problem and enhance the quality of language teaching. The students of the Engineering faculty are selected as the target population. The dissertation is based on questionnaires, interviews with the sample students and English lecturers, experience of teaching English at SAÜ. These are carried out to obtain the data and the information and explore the negative parts of the procedure. The evaluation of the program shows us language teaching in the Prep School of SAÜ has resulted in failure. The program is evaluated under four dimensions. IVFindings proves that the four dimensions cause serious problems in the period of teaching English at S AÜ. we also study on the factors affecting the success of language teaching negatively and specifically the problems and the factors affecting the preparatory classes at Sakarya University and finding a lasting resolution to these problems. The problems are divided into many different parts. Educating language teachers within the single discipline, the roles of language teachers, the roles of language learners, the role of choosing the materials, the roles of language teaching methods applied in the classroom, the status of learners' mother tongue in language classes, lack of motivation, self-confidence, self- esteem and effort are the examples of factors which affect English language teaching and learning procedure directly and negatively.
