Modernite çağı iki dönemde incelenebildiğinde (1660-1800) klasik çağ 1800-1950 modern çağ olarak ele alınabilir. Bu iki dönemden önce yine modernite içinde düşünülmesi gereken Rönesans vardır. Aslında modernite tarihinde Aydınlanma projeksiyonunda öngörülenin aksine sürekli ilerleme türünden bir özellik yoktur. Gerçekte modernite tarihinde sürekli ilerleme gösteren bir olgu vardır ve bunu insan üzerinde baskı kurma tekniklerini giderek rafıneleşmesi biçiminde tanımak olanakladır. Habermas, 'Modernity versus Postmodernity' adlı makalesinde, modemizmi süregelen bir süreç olarak tanımlar. Tanınmış bir başka sosyolog, Niklas Luhmann, Toplumun Toplumu adlı eserinin sonuna doğru, bu yüzyılın hiçbir döneminde modern bir toplumdan postmodern bir topluma geçişi ileri sürebilmeyi haklı kılacak bir çağ duraklamasına rastlanamayacağını yazar. Postmodernizm, modernizmin bu çelişkili modellerini göz ardı ederek gündeme gelmiştir. Bu yaklaşımıyla aydınlanmanın Diyalektiğinin çözümleme ve teşhislerinin bile gerisinde kalıp, modernitenin yıkımına varacak ve dolayısıyla sonuç ya kendi kendini yok etmesiyle sonuçlanacak kültürel bir olgudur. Modernitenin yıkıcı yanlarını aşmayı hedefleyen postmodernizim, günümüzde tam da bu yıkıcı yanının parçası haline gelmiştir. Yıkıcı bir modernitenin köklerini bulmak isterseniz, bunu Aydınlanma Çağma da değil, tüm insani değerlerin kar ve verimlilik değerlerine göre ikinci planda tutulduğu gelişme tasarımında aramak ile başlayabilirsiniz. Postmodernizm, Nietzsche'den beri modernizme karşı belki çok da haksız olmayarak hissedilen bir rahatsızlıkla, huzursuzlukla belli bir haklılıkla yola çıkıp, sonradan bir baskı mekanizmasına dönüşmüştür.
The age of modernity can be classified as the classical age (1660-1800) and the modern age (1800-1950) if we investigate modernism within two period. Before these two periods, Renaissance period was occured which should be handled within the modernity. But, modernity period has not continiously progressive character as imagined in the Enlightment project. In reality, there has been a fact which was continiously developed within the process of the modernity. This fact can be defined as the refinization of the developing of all pressure techniques over the humanity. Habermas, defines the modernism as a continiously process in this famous article 'Modernity versus Postmodernity'. Another famous sociolog Niklas Luhmann, argues that a transitional period or a stopping the age has not been occured within any period of the twentieth century which justify the transition from the modern to the postmodern age, at the end of his book 'Society of the Society' Postmodernism has came into agende with not paying to attention to the crantroveisial and antagonistic models of the modernism. İs a cultural fact which will terminate the modernity and also terminate itself. Post modernist analyzesand ideas represent a regressive point, against the analyzes and ideas of the dialectic of the Enlightment. These ideas and analyzes seems that not valuable than the ideas and analyzes of the dialectic of the Enlightment. Today, postmodernism or postmodernist thought represents the destructive sides of the modernism, when this thought objectives to altering these sides of the modernism. If we want to find these destructive sides of the modernity, we can find these sides within the development projects which profit maximization and productivity goals are dominant over the all values of humanity, not in the age of the Enlightment. Postmodernism, from the Nietzche, argues very justifiable critiques against the destructive effects of the modernism, and the crisis of the modernity, but, today, it turns into a refined pressure mechanism.
