Bu çalışmada, her bir ülke için 450 katılımcıdan oluşan örneklem kullanılarak, sosyal bağ teorisinin Gana ve Türkiye'deki lise öğrencileri arasındaki suçluluğa aracılık etme etkisi incelenmiştir. Bağımlı değişken olan suçluluk, beş gösterge başlığı altında sınıflandırılmıştır - toplam suçluluk, saldırı, okul suçluluğu, kamuya açık yerlerde halkın rahatsız edilmesi ve madde kullanımı. Bağımsız değişkenler, sosyal bağlanma, bağlılık, katılım (meşguliyet) ve inanç bileşenleridir. Bu sosyal bağ teorisi bileşenleri ile suç niteliğindeki eylemler arasında ters bir ilişki olacağı, ve bu bileşenlerin birleşik açıklayıcı gücünün Türkiye'de Gana'ya göre daha fazla olacağı varsayılmıştır. Genel olarak, çoklu regresyon analizinin sonuçları, Türkiye'deki durum için sosyal bağ teorisini destekler mahiyettedir. Bununla birlikte, teori Gana'daki durum için tam olarak desteklenmemiştir - bağlılık ve inanç bileşenlerinin beş suçluluk göstergesi üzerinde de anlamlı bir etkisinin olmadığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Bağlanma bileşeninin suçlulukla tutarlı bir ilişkisinin olmadığı bulgulanmıştır. Bağ teorisi bileşenlerinin birleşik açıklayıcı gücü, tahmin edildiği gibi Türkiye'de Gana'dan daha güçlüydü. Son olarak, gelecekte aynı alanda benzer araştırmalar yapacak kişiler için bazı öneriler sunulmaktadır.
Using a sample of 450 each, the mediating effect of social bonding theory on delinquency among high school students in Ghana and Turkey was examined in this study. Delinquency being the dependent variable was categorized into five indexes––total delinquency, assault, school delinquency, public disturbance and substance use. The independent variables were the components of the social bonding attachment, commitment, involvement and belief. It was hypothesized that there will be an inverse relationship between the social bonding components and delinquent acts and the combined explanatory power of the components will be greater in Turkey than in Ghana. Generally, results from multiple regression analysis gained support for the social bonding theory in Turkey. However, the theory did not gain full support in Ghana––the commitment and belief component did not have significant effect on all the five delinquent indexes. The attachment component of the bond did not have consistent relationship to delinquency. The combined explanatory power of the bond components were stronger in Turkey than in Ghana as predicted. Finally, recommendations were given for future researchers who may want to embark on similar studies.
