Geleneksel ekonomi insanı çıkarları doğrultusunda davranan ve sürekli rasyonel karar veren biri olarak varsayar. Homo enonomicus olarak tanımlanan bu insanın, her zaman rasyonel karar verdiği, sürekli aklıyla hareket ederek çıkarlarını maksimize etmek için çaba gösterdiği, tam bilgi ve mükemmel öngörüye sahip rasyonel bir "birey" olduğu kabul edilir. "Homo economicus"a ilişkin bu temel varsayımlar geleneksel ekonomide karar verme biçimlerinde belirleyici olacağı varsayılmıştır. Buradan hareketle klasik yönetim yaklaşımında yöneticilerin örgüt adına sürekli rasyonel karar veren insanlar olduğu varsayımından hareket edilmiştir. Ancak son zamanlarda deneysel iktisat ve "davranışsal ekonomi"nin görgül çalışmaları sayesinde bu varsayımların insan davranışlarını açıklamada yetersiz kaldığı, insanın sürekli rasyonel bir varlık olmadığı savını doğrulayan görgül bulguların olduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Davranışsal ekonomi alanında yapılan araştırmalar, bireylerin kararlarında her zaman rasyonel davranamadıklarını, kararlarında sınırlı rasyonel oldukları, karar verirken sezgilerine ve zihinsel kestirmelere başvurduklarını göstermiştir. Araştırmada davranışsal ekonominin varsayımlarından hareketle, yöneticinin karar verme davranışı, rasyonel, sezgisel, duygusal ve zihinsel kestirmeler bağlamında incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Yorumsamacı paradigmaya bağlı olarak kurgulanan araştırma, yöntemi itibarıyla nitel araştırma desenlerinden durum çalışmasına göre desenlenmiştir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yönteminin seçilmesinin nedeni, yöneticinin karar verme davranışı hakkında derinlemesine bilgi elde etmeye daha geniş imkan vermesi nedeniyledir. Durum çalışmasının tercih gerekçesi ise bu desenin en az bir olayın veya durumun derinlemesine incelenmesine uygun olmasıdır. Araştırmanın amacına, problemine ve genel amacına uygunluğu nedeniyle durum çalışması türlerinden iç içe geçmiş çoklu durum deseni tercih edilmiştir. İç içe geçmiş çoklu durum çalışması olarak tasarlanan bu çalışmada amaçlı örneklem tekniği ile 7 firmanın üst düzey yöneticiden görüşme tekniği ile veriler toplanmıştır. Yöneticiler ile yapılan görüşmeler kayıt altına alınan verilerin dökümü yapılarak içerik analiz tekniğine göre veriler analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularına göre, karar verme sürecinde rasyonel bir süreç izlemeye çalışan yöneticiler bilgiye ulaşma ve alternatiflerin seçimi aşamasında, Rasyonel Seçim Teorisindeki, mükemmel olanı seçme varsayımından sapıp, Simon'un sınırlı rasyonellik varsayımı ile uyumlu bir şekilde tatminkâr olanı seçme eğiliminde oldukları görülmüştür. Risk durumlarında ise daha rasyonel olma eğilimi güçlenen yöneticilerin, belirsizlik durumlarında sezgisel karar vermeyi tercih ettikleri görülmüştür. Yöneticiler, duygularının ve duygusal durumlarının kendilerini etkilemediğini söyleseler de, veri analizlerinden anlaşıldığı üzere karar verme davranışlarında duygusal eğilimler göstermektedirler. Bununla birlikte yöneticilerin deneyimi arttıkça kararlarda daha sezgisel davranma eğiliminde oldukları görülmüştür. Analiz bulguları yöneticilerin karar verme aşamasında bilişsel, duygusal ve sezgisel süreçleri birlikte kullandıklarını göstermiştir.
Subsistence Economy considers the human being as someone who pursues wealth for his/her own self-interest. This human being, named Homo Economicus, is regarded as a "rational person" with complete knowledge and perfect prediction who always uses rational judgment and seeks to maximize personal utility. These fundamental assumptions relevant to the "Homo Economicus" are assumed to be determinants of the decision-making patterns in the subsistence economy. From this point of view, the study puts forward the idea that the managers always make rational decisions on behalf of the organizations according to the classical management theory. However, thanks to the experimental economics and empirical studies of "behavioral economics", it's been recently granted that these assumptions fail to explain the human behaviors and there are empirical findings that affirm the assertion that human is not always a rational being. The empirical studies conducted in the field of behavioral economics have shown that people do not always act rationally while making decisions, they are bounded rational in their decisions, and they resort to their intuitions and availability heuristics in decision-making processes. With reference to the above behavioral economic assumptions, this study aims to analyze the decision-making behaviors within the context of rational, intuitive, emotional, and availability heuristics. The study is situated in the interpretive paradigm and designed in accordance with the case study method among the qualitative research designs as of the research method. A qualitative research method is chosen for the study because of its flexibility with respect to gathering in-depth information about the decision-making behavior of the managers. Furthermore, the case method is chosen for the study because this design suits to the in-depth analysis of at least one case. Specifically, embedded multiple case study is chosen because of its appropriateness to the aim, problem, and general purpose of the study. Data is collected by using an interview technique with senior managers of seven business corporations with purposive sampling methods in the study designed as an embedded multiple case study. The interviews with the managers are analyzed in accordance with the content analysis method by performing a database dump of the recorded data. As stated by the findings of the research, it's seen that the managers, seeking to follow a rational process during the decision-making, deviate from the assumption of the Rational Choice Theory as choosing something that is perfect, and they tend to that of choosing something that is satisfactory in accordance with Simon's Bounded Rationality. Furthermore, it is determined that while the managers' tendency of rationalism strengthens in the states of risks, they chose to decide intuitively in indeterminacy situations. Although the managers express not being affected by senses and sensible cases, emotional tendencies in their decision-making behaviors are understood clearly from data analysis. However, it's seen that the more experienced the manager is, the more tendencies s/he has to behave intuitively in her/his decisions. It's concluded from the findings obtained in the study that the managers use the cognitive, emotional, and intuitive processes collectively at the decision-making stage.
