dc.description.abstract SUMMARY BENCHMARKING on MEASURING and IMPROVING ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE and APPLICATION of BENCHMARKING in THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY Keywords: Benchmarking, Measure-Based Performance Management, Performance Improvement, Competitive Performance Benchmarking measures a company's product, services and practices against those of its competitors or other acknowledged leaders in their field. The first purpose of benchmarking is to measure and evaluate organizational performance and gain continuous improvement. Measuring and improving performance, is the essence of benchmarking. For this reason, this study aims to investigate how it's being used as an effective performance measurement and improvement tool by looking into some cases in the manufacturing industry. Throughout this study it is revealed mat, X Gıda San.T.A.Ş., Toyota Otomotiv Türkiye A.Ş, Goodyear Türk A.Ş., Hyundai Assan A.Ş, and Tırsan AŞ. use benchmarking as an effective methodology for organizational improvement; developing their performance measurement systems and validating their operational position and maintain world class performance. These companies use benchmarking in order to establish and update performance measures, establish accountability for performance, gather and analyze external performance data and set competitive goals and measure the progress. That's why, organizational performance today, is managed more effectively than ever before. It relies on "best in class" performance data and right performance metrics. In this competitive environment, in order to drive change and implement strategies quickly, leading organizations are using benchmarking measurements and tying their performance metrics to their strategic plans. So, performance management came to mean measure and benchmarking - based, strategy driven performance management. Organizations in Turkey which use benchmarking in a regular basis, should establish their own planning and measurement networks and working groups to share and deploy best practice knowledge and process improvements with each other.
