Abstract:
The anechoic chamber materials are based on specially shaped polyurethane materials doped with carbon materials such as carbon black and graphite and sometimes further supported with metal oxides and sintered metal oxide tiles. Because of the special shapes such as cones and pyramids used in anechoic chambers with high depth, the molding is very costly and this alone increases the cost of such materials to a high degree. During our fast prototyping efforts for another purpose, we tried to use the polyester acoustic sponge materials as material matrix. The homogeneity and the ease of preparation made us consider testing them as a possible low-cost replacement for anechoic chamber material.
