Dünyada hızla artan nüfus ve bu nüfusun artan enerji talebinin karşılanması için fosil yakıtların kullanımındaki artış, çevresel kirlilikleri büyük oranda arttırmaktadır. 21.yy itibari ile kişisel ulaşım araçları olarak özel jetler ve otomobillerin sayısında yaşanan artışlar ve sanayinin gelişmesi bu sanayilerde kullanılan fosil yakıtlarda artış yaşanmıştır. Dünya üzerinde milyonlarca yıl önce yaşayan hayvan ve bitki kalıntılarının oluşturduğu yakıtlara fosil yakıtlar denmektedir. Petrol, kömür ve doğalgaz gibi fosil yakıtların kullanılmasıyla yerine yeni enerji kaynaklarının gelmesi milyonlarca yıl süreceği için bu tip kaynaklara yenilenemez enerji kaynakları denmektedir. Fosil yakıtların diğer bir dezavantajı ise bu yakıtların kullanımı ile atmosfere sera gazları salınmaktadır. Atmosferdeki karbondioksit (CO2), metan (CH4), diazot monoksit (N2O) ve ozon (O3) gazları sera etkisine önemli katkıda bulunmaktadır. Sera gazlarının atmosferdekimiktarlarının artması Güneşten Dünya'ya gelen ışınların sera gazları tarafından soğurulmasına, Dünya'nın ortalama sıcaklığının artmasına sebep olmaktadır. Yeryüzünde fosil yakıtların sınırlı olması ve çevreye verdiği zararlar nedeniyle yeni enerji kaynakları araştırılmaktadır. Fosil yakıtların kullanımının artması ciddi oranlarda çevresel kirliliğin artmasına sebep olduğu gibi fosil yakıt kaynaklarının kısıtlı olması araştırmacıları yeni enerji kaynaklarının keşfine yöneltmiştir. Bilim insanları tarafından dünyadaki enerji ihtiyacını çevreye zararı olmadan ve sürdürülebilirliği koruyabilecek enerjinin güneş-hidrojen olduğu öngörülmektedir. Güneşten gelen foton enerjisini kullanarak suyun elektrolizi ile hidrojen üretimi adeta sonsuz bir enerji sunmaktadır. Hidrojen enerjisinin yakıt olarak kullanılması durumunda atmosfere yalnızca su ve su buharı yayılmaktadır. Hidrojen (H2) enerjisinin belirli avantaj ve dezavantajları bulunmaktadır. Son yıllarda araçtırmacılar bu dezavantajların ortadan kaldırılması, H2 üretim ve depolama süreçlerinin iyileştirilmesi için çalışmalara yoğunluk vermektedir. H2 1500'lü yıllarda keşfedidilmiştir ve 1700'lü yıllarda yanıcı özelliğinin farkına varılmıştır. Dünyada en basit formda ve en çok bulunan element olma özelliğine sahiptir. Doğada gaz formunda bulunan Hidrojen, kokusuz, renksiz ve havadan 14,4 kat daha hafif zehirsiz bir gazdır. Hidrojenin bilinen diğer tüm yakıtlar arasında birim kütle başına en fazla enerjiye sahip yakıt kaynağıdır. Örnek verecek olursak; 1 kg H2 enerjisi 2,6 kg doğal gaza ya da 3,1 kg benzine eşdeğer enerjiye sahiptir. Dünyadaki hidrojen kapasitesinin %62'sini amonyak(NH3), %24'ü rafineri, %9'uda metanol (CH3OH) üretimi için kullanılmaktadır. H2 üretiminde en çok kullanılan yöntem doğalgaz buhar reformasyonudur ve dünya genelinde hidrojen üretiminin yaklaşık %50'sini kapsamaktadır. Fakat bu yöntemin en büyük dezavantajı sentez esnasında karbondioksit yaymasıdır. Günümüzde H2 üretimi büyük ölçekte fosil yakıt kaynağı olan doğalgaz kullanılarak üretilmektedir. Bu üretim yöntemi çevre kirliliği ve diğer iklim değiştirici emisyonların yayılmasına sebep olmaktadır. Ayrıca üretimi fosil yakıta bağlı olduğu için sürdürülebilir yakıt olma seçeneğinden uzaklaşmaktadır. Bu üretim yöntemine alternatif olarak suyun elektrolizi ve termokimyasal çevrimler çevreye karşı herhangi bir olumsuz etki taşımadığı için en çok arzu edilen proseslerdir. Aynı zamanda H2 enerjisi üretiminde güneş enerjisinin kullanımıyla suyun elektrolizi yapılırsa sonsuz bir döngü elde edilebilir. Üretim metotları ve bunun sonucu açığa çıkan ürünlere göre hidrojen üretimi için bir renklendirme sınıflandırması bulunmaktadır. Yeşil H2 üretimi sıfıra en yakın gaz emisyonuna sahipken gri hidrojen üretim sınıfı ise en yüksek sera gazı emisyonuna sahiptir. Yeşil H2 üretimde yenilebilir enerji kullanılarak tamamen sürdürülebilir bir enerji geçişi gerçekleştirilmiş olur. Bu konu hakkında en fazla kurulmuş teknoloji seçeneği ve bilimsel araştırma yenilebilir hidrojen üretiminde suyun elektrolizidir. Bu prosese fotokatalitik H2 üretimi denmektedir. Katalizör ve fotokimya terimlerinin bir araya gelmesi ile oluşan fotokataliz süreci, bir fotokatalizör yardımıyla güneş kaynaklı fotondan gelen enerjinin yakalanması ve aktif yüzeyleri ile redoks tepkimelerine imkan vermesiyle meydana gelen enerji olarak tanımlanabilir. Fotokalitik H2 üretimi, ilk olarak fotokatalizörün yüzey tepkimesiyle başlar ve foton katalizör yüzeyinde ya da yüzeye yakın bir bölgede absorplanır. Soğurulan fotonun enerjisine göre farklı uyarılmalar gerçekleşmektedir. Ultraviyole (1 nm < λ< 400 nm) ve görünür alan (400 nm< λ< 700 nm) ışımaları genellikle değerlik elektronları uyarmakta ve fotokimyasal tepkimelere yol açmaktadır. Fotokatalizör olarak kullanılan yarıiletkenler, iketkenlik bandını değerlik bandından uygun bir bant boşluğu ile ayıran bir bant yapısına sahip materyallerdir. Gelen fotonun enerjisi bant aralığından daha büyük olduğu durumlarda sırasıyla iletkenlik ve değerlik bandında elektron ve boşluklar oluşur. Meydana gelen bu olay elektrolize benzer redoks tepkimelerine sebep olur. Suyun ayrışmasında, H2 oluşturmak için su molekülü elektronlarla indirgenir, O2 oluşturmak içinse boşluklarla yükseltgenir. Su molekülü güneş spektrumunun en düşük enerjiye sahip bölgesini yani infrared ışınları absorplayabilmektedir. Ancak bu bölgenin enerjisi su molekülünün fotokimyasal olarak ayrışması için gerekli enerjiyi sağlamaz. Bu sebeple suyun ayrışabilmesi için ışığı absorplayabilecek bir yarıiletken maddeye ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Fotokataliz işleminde ısı, ışık gibi sistem performansını etkileyen çeşitli parametreler bulunmaktadır. Bu parametreler arasında en önemlilerinden biri de yarıiletken seçimidir. Güneş kaynağından gelen foton enerjisinin elektrokimyasal enerjiye dönüştürülmesi için yarıiletken yüzeyinde güçlü bir oksidasyon meydana gelmektedir. Foton enerjisinin soğurulmasıyla yarıiletkende uyarılan electron değerlik bandından iletkenlik bandına geçer. Böylelikle yarıiletken yüzeyinde elektron-boşluk çiftleri oluşur. Bu döngünün tekrarlanabilirliği yarıiletken cinsine göre değişkenlik göstermektedir. Metal gibi materyallerde oldukça kısa süreli olurken ametal malzemelerde bu döngü daha uzun vakit almaktadır. Nanoteknoloji kullanılarak fotoaktivitesinin yüksek, elektron transfer sürecinin çok hızlı ve iletim bandı seviyesinin istenilen düzeyde olması gibi önemli yapısal özelliklere sahip fotokatalizörler geliştirilmektedir. Bu güne kadar fotokatalizör olarak çeşitli yarıiletken geliştirmeleri yapılmıştır. Geliştirilen fotokatalizörlerin her zaman belirli bir avantaj ve dezavantaj mekaniği olmuştur. En çok tercih edilen yarıiletkenler arasında oksitler, oksinitrürüler, sülfitler ve nanokompozitler gösterilebilir. Bu çalışma, görünür ışık altında H2 üretiminde fotokatalizör olarak kullanılacak nanokompozit araştırmasını kapsamaktadır. Yapılan çalışma, tatlı kiraz meyvesi ekstratının kullanımı ile NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S'nin nanoparçacıklarının yeşil sentezi hakkında rapor vermektedir. Sentezlenen fotokatalizörlerin yapısal, morfolojik ve optik özellikleri XRD, FTIR, UV-görünür bölge ve SEM ile değerlendirildi. Kristal yapıları ve diğer karakteristik özelliklerinin elektrokimyasal ve bant boşluğu gibi fotokatalizörler için kritik özellikler incelendi. Sentezlenen fotokatalizörlerin H2 üretim verimlilikleri, 4 saatlik bir reaksiyon süresi ile termal iletken dedektörlü (TCD) gaz kromotografisi (GC) ile belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda hazırlanan NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S üçlü nanokompoziti, NiMoO4, g-C3N4, Ag2S ve NiMoO4/g-C3N4 ile karşılaştırıldığında 2040,2 μmol g-1 h-1 ile en yüksek H2 üretim oranına sahiptir. Bu katalizör tasarım sisteminde, NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S'in S-şeması heteroyapısı tarafından oluşturulan bir elektrik alanının varlığında, fototaşıyıcıların etkili göçü sağlanır ve yararlı yük taşıyıcılarının rekombinasyonu önlenir. Bu çalışmada, fotokatalitik H2 üretimi için tatlı kiraz meyvesinden üçlü nanokompozitin yeşil sentezinin kullanımı vurgulamaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında yeşil H2 üretiminde dikkate değer bir performans artışı elde edilmiştir. Geliştirilen nanokompozit, yarıiletken ile fotokatalizde önemli parametrelerden olan fotokatalitik aktivite ve üstün fotoredoks kapasitesi gibi iyileştirmeler ile elde edilen sonuçların, gelecek dönemde yürütülecek çalışmalara ışık tutacağını ümit ediyoruz.
The world's population is rapidly increasing, leading to a surge in the demand for energy. Unfortunately, this demand is being met by the increased use of fossil fuels, resulting in a significant rise in environmental pollution. The 21st century has seen a sharp increase in the number of private jets and automobiles used for personal transportation, as well as in industrial development, which has further increased the use of fossil fuels. This, in turn, has led to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone (O3) are greenhouse gases that significantly contribute to the greenhouse effect. The increase in their concentration in the atmosphere results in the absorption of solar radiation by these gases, leading to an increase in the Earth's average temperature. Research into new energy sources is being conducted due to the limited availability of fossil fuels on Earth and the environmental damage they cause. The increased use of fossil fuels has led to a significant rise in environmental pollution, and the limited resources have prompted researchers to explore alternative energy sources. Scientists predict that solar-hydrogen could meet the world's energy needs sustainably without harming the environment. Hydrogen can be produced by electrolysis of water using photon energy from the sun, offering an almost infinite source of energy. When used as a fuel, hydrogen emits only water and water vapour into the atmosphere. Although hydrogen energy has advantages, it also has disadvantages. In recent years, researchers have been working intensively to eliminate these disadvantages and improve hydrogen production and storage processes. Hydrogen was discovered in the 1500s, and its flammability was realised in the 1700s. It is the simplest and most abundant element in the world, found in nature as a colourless, odourless, and non-toxic gas that is 14.4 times lighter than air. Hydrogen has the highest energy per unit mass of all known fuels. For example, 1 kg of H2 energy is equivalent to 2.6 kg of natural gas or 3.1 kg of petrol. Currently, 62% of the world's hydrogen capacity is used for ammonia (NH3) production, 24% for refining, and 9% for methanol (CH3OH). The most commonly used method for hydrogen production is natural gas steam reforming, which accounts for approximately 50% of global hydrogen production. However, this method has a significant drawback as it emits carbon dioxide during synthesis. Currently, hydrogen production is predominantly sourced from natural gas, a fossil fuel that contributes to environmental pollution and climate change. This method is unsustainable and alternative production methods, such as electrolysis of water and thermochemical cycles, are more desirable due to their minimal environmental impact. Simultaneously, an infinite cycle can be achieved by performing electrolysis of water using solar energy for hydrogen production. There is a classification of colour-coding for hydrogen production based on the production methods and resulting products. Green hydrogen production has the lowest gas emissions, while grey hydrogen production has the highest greenhouse gas emissions. Green hydrogen production achieves a completely sustainable energy transition by using renewable energy. The most established technology option and scientific research on this subject is the electrolysis of water for the production of renewable hydrogen. This process is called photocatalytic hydrogen production. The photocatalysis process, which is formed by the combination of catalyst and photochemistry terms, can be defined as the energy that occurs by capturing the energy from the sun's photons with the help of a photocatalyst and allowing redox reactions with its active surfaces. Photocatalytic hydrogen production begins with a surface reaction of the photocatalyst, where a photon is absorbed on or near the surface of the catalyst. Different excitations occur depending on the energy of the absorbed photon. Ultraviolet (1 nm < λ < 400 nm) and visible (400 nm < λ < 700 nm) radiations generally excite valence electrons and lead to photochemical reactions. Semiconductors used as photocatalysts are materials with a band structure that separates the valence band from the conduction band by an appropriate band gap. When the energy of the incoming photon is greater than the band gap, electrons and holes are generated in the conduction and valence bands, respectively. This event causes redox reactions similar to electrolysis. During water electrolysis, the water molecule is reduced with electrons to form H2, and oxidized with vacancies to form O2. The water molecule can absorb the lowest energy region of the solar spectrum, which is the infrared region. However, the energy of this region is not sufficient to provide the necessary energy for the photolytic dissociation of the water molecule. Therefore, a semiconductor material that can absorb light is required for the separation of water. In photocatalysis, various parameters such as heat and light affect system performance. One of the most important of these parameters is the choice of semiconductor. A strong oxidation occurs on the semiconductor surface to convert photon energy from the sun into electrochemical energy. When photon energy is absorbed, the excited electrons in the valence band of the semiconductor transition to the conduction band. Thus, electron-hole pairs are formed on the semiconductor surface. The repeatability of this cycle varies depending on the type of semiconductor. While it is quite short in materials such as metals, in non-metallic materials, this cycle takes longer. Photocatalysts with important structural properties such as high photoactivity, very fast electron transfer process, and desired CB level are being developed using nanotechnology. Various semiconductor developments have been made as photocatalysts to date. These photocatalysts always have certain advantages and disadvantages. Among the most preferred semiconductors are oxides, oxynitrides, sulfides, and nanocomposites. This study covers the research on nanocomposites to be used as a photocatalyst for hydrogen production under visible light. Research reports the green synthesis of NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S nanoparticles using sweet cherry fruit extract. The synthesized photocatalysts were evaluated for their structural, morphological, and optical properties using XRD, FTIR, UV-visible spectroscopy, and SEM. The electrochemical and band gap characteristics of crystal structures were examined as critical properties for photocatalysts. The H2 production efficiency of the synthesized photocatalysts was determined by thermal conductivity detector gas chromatography after a 4-hour reaction time. Among NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S, NiMoO4, g-C3N4, Ag2S, and NiMoO4/g-C3N4, NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S had the highest hydrogen production rate of 2040.2 μmol g-1 h-1. In this catalyst design system, effective migration of photocarriers and prevention of recombination of useful charge carriers are achieved by the presence of an electric field created by the S-scheme heterostructure of NiMoO4/g-C3N4/Ag2S. This study highlights the use of green synthesis of a triple nanocomposite from sweet cherry fruit for photocatalytic hydrogen production. This study has achieved a significant increase in green H2 production. The improvements in photocatalytic activity and superior photo-redox capacity, which are important parameters in photocatalysis, have resulted in these results. It is hoped that these findings will be useful for future studies.
