Kristallerin toplam enerjilerinin belirlenmesi onların fiziksel özelliklerinin araştırılmasında ilk basamaktır. Çünkü kristallerin elektronik ve fonon yapısına toplam enerji kullanılarak ulaşılabilir. Hiçbir deneysel parametreye ihtiyaç duymadan dalga denkleminin çözümünü veren Yoğunluk Fonksiyonel Teorisi, kristallerin davranışlarını açıklayan Schrödinger denkleminin çözümünü bulabilmek adına kullanılan en ideal yaklaşımdır. Bunu gerçekleştirirken ihtiyacı olan veriler yalnızca kristalin örgüsü ve örgü parametreleridir. Bu tez çalışmasında Yoğunluk Fonksiyonel Teorisini ele alan Quantum Espresso paket programı kullanılarak A15 tipi V3Ge bileşiğinin yapısal, elektronik, elastik ve fonon özellikleri araştırılarak süperiletkenlik mekanizması teorik olarak incelenmiştir. Uzay grubu Pm3 ̅n (No:223) olan ve basit kübik örgüye sahip V3Ge bileşiğine ilişkin yapısal özellikler ayrıntılı olarak incelenmiştir. Öncelikle XCRYSDEN programı kullanılarak V ve Ge atomları arası bağ uzunlukları hesaplanmıştır. Sonrasında birbirlerinden farklı örgü sabiti değerleri için V3Ge kristal yapısı oluşturularak, seçilen her bir örgü sabitine karşılık gelen enerji değerleri elde edilmiştir. Bu enerji değerleri içerisinde minimum enerji seviyesine karşılık gelen ve bu bileşiği A15 kristal yapısında kararlı kılan örgü sabiti değeri spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılmadan (8x8x8) k-noktası ağı kullanıldığında 4.771 Å, (12x12x12) k-noktası ağı kullanıldığında ise 4.772 Å olarak hesaplanmıştır. Yapılan hesaplamalarda V3Ge için spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılarak, degauss değeri 0.05 ve k-noktası ağı (8x8x8) seçilerek elde edilen örgü sabiti değeri ise 4.775 Å olarak elde edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte karşılaştırma yapmak ve ileride yapacağımız hesaplamalarda kullanmak için degauss 0.02 ve k-noktası ağı (8x8x8) alınarak da hesaplama yapılmış ve diğer sonuçlarla neredeyse aynı değerler elde edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, farklı degauss ve k-noktası ağları için tekrar tekrar yapılan örgü sabiti hesaplamalarında optimum değere, degauss=0.05 ve k-noktası ağı olarak ise (8x8x8) kullanılarak varılabileceği gözlenmiştir. Birbirlerinden farklı örgü sabiti değerlerine tekabül eden enerji değerleri ve Murnaghan durum denklemleri yardımıyla ortaya çıkan hacim modülü ve hacim modülünün basınca göre birinci türevi spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılarak sırasıyla 176.8 GPa ve 4.02 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Aynı değerler spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılmadan ise 178.5 GPa ve 4.33 olarak belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen bu sonuçların hesaplamaları için örgü sabiti değerini optimum düzeyde veren degauss değeri ve k-noktası ağları kullanılmıştır. V3Ge bileşiğinin yapısal özelliklerinin incelenmesi esnasında hesaplanan örgü sabiti değeri ile oluşturulan kristal yapı kullanılarak elektronik özelliklere ilişkin hesaplamalara geçilmiştir. Genelleştirilmiş Gradyan Yaklaşımı ve Yapay Potansiyel Metodu kullanılarak yapılan bu hesaplamalar neticesinde basit kübik örgünün yüksek simetri yönleri boyunca elde edilen V3Ge bileşiğinin elektronik bant yapısı grafikleri, spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılarak ve spin-orbit etkileşimi hariç tutularak ayrı ayrı hazırlanmıştır. Hazırlanan bu grafiklerde elektronik enerji bantlarının, Fermi enerji seviyesini bazı simetri yönlerinde kestiği gözlenmiş ve bu gözlem V3Ge bileşiğinin metalik bir karaktere sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Bunun yanı sıra V3Ge kristali için hesaplanan elektron durum yoğunluğu grafiklerinden, tez çalışmasının ana temalarından olan V3Ge kristalinin süperiletkenlik mekanizmasının araştırılmasında BCS teorisine göre önemli bir yer tutan Fermi enerjisi civarındaki durum yoğunluğu, spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılarak tam-rölativistik ultrasoft yapay potansiyeller kullanılarak N(EF)=8.275 Durum/eV, spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılmadan N(EF)=8.268 Durum/eV olarak hesaplanmıştır. Hesaplanan bu durum yoğunluğuna en büyük katkının %87 oranı ile V atomu 3d orbitalleri tarafından sağlandığı gözlemlenmiştir. Süperiletken materyallerin elastik özelliklerinin araştırılması, bu materyallerin kullanım alanlarının belirlenmesinde önemli bir yere sahip olmasının yanı sıra süperiletkenlik özelliklerinin teorik olarak anlaşılabilmesi için de oldukça önemlidir. Bu nedenle bu tez çalışmasında V3Ge bileşiğinin elastik özellikleri ayrıntılı olarak ele alınmıştır. Optimum değerlere ulaşmamızı sağlayan degauss ve k-noktası ağları sırasıyla 0.05 ve (12x12x12) olarak seçilerek, Gerilme-Gerinim (Stress-Strain) metodu ile elastik sabitler değerleri hesaplamaları yapılmıştır. Sonuç olarak spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katıldığında V3Ge bileşiği için elastik sabitler C11= 313.144 GPa, C12= 119.751 GPa ve C44= 72.540 GPa olarak hesaplanmıştır. Spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılmadan elde edilen elastik sabitler değerleri ise C11= 313.671GPa, C12= 120.086 GPa ve C44= 72.836 GPa olarak bulunmuştur. Born kriterlerine sağlayan bu değerler, V3Ge bileşiğinin mekanik olarak kararlı bir yapıda olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca kübik kristallerin esnek/kırılgan yapılarını ortaya koymada oldukça etkili olan Cauchy basıncı da spin-orbit etkileşimi dahil ve hariç olmak üzere sırasıyla C12-C44= 47.211 GPa ve C12-C44= 47.250 GPa olarak hesaplanmıştır. V3Ge bileşiğine ait elastik sabitlerin hesaplanmasının ardından Voigt-Reuss-Hill (VRH) yöntemi kullanılarak hacim modülü ve kayma modülü değerleri hesaplanmıştır. Hesaplamalar neticesinde spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılarak elde edilen hacim modülü değeri 184.216 GPa, kayma modülü değeri ise 81.398 GPa olarak belirlenmiştir. Spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılmadan ise hacim modülü 184.614, kayma modülü ise 81.629 olarak elde edilmiştir. Bu hesaplamaların ardından malzemelerin rijitliğini gösteren Young modülü değeri spin-orbit etkileşimli hesaplamalarda 212,843 GPa, spin-orbit etkileşimi dahil edilmeyen hesaplamalarda ise 213.428 GPa olarak belirlenmiştir. Eksenel ve yanal gerinimlerin mutlak değerlerinin oranı olarak ifade edilen Poisson oranı ise spin-orbit etkileşimi dahil edilerek ve hariç tutularak 0.307 olarak hesaplanmıştır. BCS teorisi süperiletkenliğin kaynağı olarak Cooper çiftlerini gösterir. Cooper çiftlerinin bir arada kalmasını sağlayan temel etken ise fonon alışverişidir. Bu nedenle materyallerin süperiletkenlik özellikleri ile doğrudan ilişki olan fonon özellikleri de bu tez çalışmasında detaylı olarak ele alınmıştır. V3Ge bileşiğinin fonon hesaplamaları Lineer Tepki Metodu kullanılarak yapılmıştır. V3Ge bileşiğine ait fonon durumlarını elde etmek için 4x4x4 q-noktası ağında 10 adet dinamik matris kullanılmıştır. Momentum uzayında elde edilen bu matrisler normal uzaya Fourier dönüşümleri kullanılarak taşınmıştır. Daha sonra hareket denklemi hesaplaması yapılarak birinci Brillouin bölgesinde simetri yönlerinde fonon eğrileri elde edilmiştir. İlk olarak V3Ge bileşiği için noktasında hesaplanan optik fonon modlarının frekansları, aktif ve pasif fonon modları ve bu modların oluşumuna katkı sunan atom titreşimlerinin öz karakterleri incelenmiştir. Daha sonra V3Ge bileşiği için yüksek simetri yönleri boyunca elde edilen fonon spektrumunda 24 adet fonon modu bulunduğu gözlenmiştir. Bu modların 3'ü akustik ve 21'i ise optik moddur. Gerek spin-orbit etkileşimi dahil edilerek gerekse spin-orbit etkileşimi hariç tutularak elde edilen hesaplamalarda T1g, T2g, Eg ve A2g modlarının oluşumlarında yalnızca V atomları titreşimlerinin etkin olduğu, T1u ve T2u modlarının oluşumlarında ise V ve Ge atomlarının beraber katkı sağladıkları görülmüştür. V3Ge bileşiği içerisinde V atomları sayısal olarak fazla olmalarından dolayı spektrumun oluşumunda aktif bir rol oynamışlardır. Bu yüzden V ve Ge atomları arasındaki kütle farkının büyük olmasına karşın fonon spektrumunda bir boşluk bölgesi yoktur. Fonon dağılım grafiklerinde göze çarpan bir diğer husus ise V3Ge bileşiğinin yalnızca pozitif frekanslara sahip olmasıdır. Bu gözlem V3Ge kristalinin dinamik açıdan kararlı olduğunun bir göstergesi niteliğindedir. V3Ge bileşiğinin süperiletkenlik mekanizmasının incelenmesi kapsamında elektron-fonon etkileşim parametresinin doğru bir şekilde hesaplanabilmesi oldukça önemlidir. Hangi fonon modlarının elektronlar ile etkileştiğini bulabilmek ve sağlıklı bir elektron-fonon etkileşim parametresine ulaşabilmek için Eliashberg spektral fonksiyonu hesaplanmıştır. Yapılan hesaplamalarda 32x32x32 değerinde k-noktası ağı kullanılmıştır ve neticesinde ortalama fonon frekansı spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılarak 259.718 K, spin-orbit etkileşimi hesaba katılmadan 260.418 K olarak elde edilmiştir. Elektron-fonon etkileşim parametresi 0.699 olarak bulunmuştur. Ortalama fonon frekansı ve elektron-fonon etkileşim parametresi değerleri Migdal-Eliashberg yaklaşımı kullanılarak V3Ge bileşiğinin süperiletkenliğe geçiş kritik sıcaklığı yaklaşık olarak *=0.14 değeri ile 6.271 K olarak ortaya konmuştur.
The study of the physical properties of crystals begins with the calculation of their total energy. Because both the electronic and vibrational structure can be derived from the total energy. Density Functional Theory, which gives the solution of the wave equation without the need for any experimental parameters, is the most perfect approach to obtain the solution of the Schrödinger equation describing the behavior of crystals. The only data it needs while doing this is the lattice and lattice parameters of the crystal. In this thesis, the superconductivity mechanism was theoretically examined by investigating the structural, electronic, elastic and phonon properties of the A15 type V3Ge compound using the Quantum Espresso package program, which deals with Density Functional Theory. Structural properties of the V3Ge compound, which has space group Pm3 ̅n (No:223) and a simple cubic lattice, have been examined in detail. First of all, bond lengths between V and Ge atoms were calculated using the XCRYSDEN program. Subsequently, the V3Ge crystal structure was created for different lattice constant values and the energy values corresponding to each selected lattice constant were obtained. Among these energy values, the lattice constant value, which corresponds to the minimum energy level and makes this compound stable in the A15 crystal structure, was calculated as 4.771 Å when the (8x8x8) k-point mesh was used without including the spin-orbit interaction, and 4.772 Å when the (12x12x12) k-point mesh was used. For V3Ge, the spin-orbit interaction was included in the calculation, the degauss value was 0.02 and the lattice constant value obtained by choosing the k-point mesh (8x8x8) was obtained as 4.775 Å. However, in order to make a comparison and use it in future calculations, calculations were made using degauss 0.02 and k-point mesh (8x8x8) and almost the same values as the other results were obtained. As a result, it has been observed that in repeated lattice constant calculations for different degauss and k-point meshes, the optimum value can be reached by using degauss= 0.02 and k-point mesh (8x8x8). The bulk modulus and the first derivative of the bulk modulus with respect to pressure, obtained by using the energy values corresponding to different lattices and the Murnaghan state equations, were calculated as 176.8 GPa and 4.02, respectively, by including the spin-orbit interaction. The same values were determined as 178.5 GPa and 4.33 without including the spin-orbit interaction. Degauss value and k-point meshes, which give the lattice constant value at the optimum level, were used for the calculations of the bulk modulus and the first derivative of the bulk modulus with respect to pressure. While examining the structural properties of the V3Ge compound, calculations regarding the electronic properties were made using the crystal structure created with the lattice constant value calculated. As a result of these calculations made using the Generalized Gradient Approach and Pseudopotential Method, the electronic band structure graphs of the V3Ge compound obtained along the high symmetry directions of the simple cubic lattice were prepared separately by including the spin-orbit interaction in the calculation and excluding the spin-orbit interaction. In these prepared graphs, it has been observed that the electronic energy bands cut the Fermi energy level in some symmetry directions and this observation showed that the V3Ge compound had a metallic character. In addition, from the electron state density graph calculated for the V3Ge crystal, the state density around the Fermi energy, which has an important place according to the BCS theory in the investigation of the superconductivity mechanism of the V3Ge crystal, which is one of the main themes of the thesis, was calculated using full-relativistic ultrasoft pseudopotentials by including the spin-orbit interaction in the calculation N(EF)=8.275 States/eV, calculated as N(EF)=8.268 States/eV without including spin-orbit interaction in the calculation. It has been observed that the largest contribution to this calculated density of states is provided by the 3d orbitals of the V atoms, with a rate of approximately %87. Investigation of the elastic properties of superconducting materials is very important for the theoretical understanding of superconductivity properties as well as having an important place in determining the usage areas of these materials. Therefore, in this thesis, the elastic properties of the V3Ge compound are discussed in detail. Degauss and k-point meshes, which enable us to reach optimum values, were selected as 0.05 and (12x12x12) respectively, and elastic constant values were calculated using the Stress-Strain method. As a result, when the spin-orbit interaction was included in the calculation, the elastic constants for the V3Ge compound were calculated as C11 = 313.144 GPa, C12 = 119.751 GPa and C44 = 72.540 GPa. The elastic constants values obtained without including the spin-orbit interaction in the calculation were found to be C11 = 313.671 GPa, C12 = 120.086 GPa and C44 = 72.836 GPa. In addition, the Cauchy pressure, which is very effective in revealing the flexible/brittle structures of cubic crystals, was calculated as C12 -C44 = 47.211 GPa and C12 -C44 = 47.250 GPa respectively, including and excluding the spin-orbit interaction. After calculating the elastic constants of the V3Ge compound, the bulk modulus and the shear modulus values were calculated using the Voigt-Reuss-Hill (VRH) method. As a result of the calculations, the bulk modulus value obtained by including the spin-orbit interaction in the calculation was determined as 184.216 GPa, and the shear modulus value was determined as 81.398 GPa. Without including the spin-orbit interaction in the calculation, the bulk modulus was obtained as 184.614 GPa and the shear modulus was 81.629 GPa. Following these calculations, the Young's modulus value, which shows the rigidity of the materials, was determined as 212.843 GPa in calculations with spin-orbit interaction, and 213.428 GPa in calculations not including spin-orbit interaction. Poisson's ratio, expressed as the ratio of the absolute values of axial and lateral strains, was calculated as 0.307 by including and excluding the spin-orbit interaction. BCS theory points to Cooper pairs as the source of superconductivity. The main factor that keeps Cooper pairs together is phonon interaction. For this reason, the phonon properties of materials, which are directly related to their superconductivity properties, are also discussed in detail in this thesis study. The phonon calculations of the V3Ge compound were made using the Linear Response Technique. In order to obtain the phonon spectra of the V3Ge compound, 10 dynamic matrices were used in a 4x4x4 q-point meshes. Then, these matrices obtained in the reciprocal lattice space were transferred to the normal space with Fourier transformations. By solving the equation of motion, phonon curves in the symmetry directions in the 1st Brillouin zone were obtained. The calculation of the density of states was made with larger number of q vectors taken inside the reduced first Brillouin zone. Firstly, the frequencies of the optical phonon modes calculated at the point for the V3Ge compound, active and passive phonon modes and eigencharacters of the atomic vibrations that contribute to the formation of the modes have been investigated. Then, it was observed that there were 24 phonon modes in the phonon spectrum obtained along the high symmetry directions for the V3Ge compound, including 3 acoustic and 21 optical phonons. Firstly, the frequencies of the optical phonon modes, active and passive phonon modes, and the eigencharacteristics of the atomic vibrationsthat contribute to the formation of these modes, calculated at the point for the V3Ge compound, were examined. In the calculations obtained both by including the spin-orbit interaction and excluding the spin-orbit interaction, it was observed that only the vibrations of V atoms were effective in the formation of T1g, T2g, Eg and A2g modes. It has been observed that V and Ge atoms contribute together in the formation of T1u and T2u modes. The numerical superiority of V atoms in the formation of the V3Ge crystal structure ensured that there was no gap region in the phonon spectrum despite the large mass difference between them and Ge atoms. The fact that only positive frequency values are present in the phonon distribution graphs is an indication that the V3Ge compound is dynamically stable. When the phonon density of states graphs were examined, it have been observed that the phonon modes in the frequency range between 5.5 THz and 8.3 THz, which made the biggest contribution to the value, originated from V atoms. When all calculations and observations regarding the phonon properties of the V3Ge crystal are combined with the results regarding the electronic properties of the V3Ge crystal, it can be concluded that the source of superconductivity of the V3Ge crystal is the interaction of the electrons forming the d orbitals of the V atoms and the phonons formed by the V atoms at low frequencies. It is very important to be able to calculate the electron-phonon interaction parameter accurately within the scope of examining the superconductivity mechanism of the V3Ge compound. The Eliashberg spectral function was calculated to find out which phonon modes interact with electrons and to obtain a healthy electron-phonon interaction parameter. For these calculations, a (32x32x32) k-point mesh was used, and as a result, the average phonon frequency was obtained as 259.718 K by including the spin-orbit interaction in the calculations, and as 260.418 K without the spin-orbit interaction in the calculations. The electron-phonon interaction parameter was found to be 0.699. Using the Migdal-Eliashberg approach, the average phonon frequency and electron-phonon interaction parameter values revealed that the critical temperature of the V3Ge compound for transition to superconductivity was approximately 6.271 K with a value of *=0.14.
