<title>AN INVESTIGATION ON TEACHING MATERIALS USED IN SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12619/44508</link>
<description>AN INVESTIGATION ON TEACHING MATERIALS USED IN SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON
Sağlam, Halil İbrahim
The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching materials employed during social studies lessons on the basis of certain variables. Specifically, the researcher tried to find out whether teachers' gender, service length, having a personal computer, receiving an in-service training regarding the use of teaching materials, having an interest on using technological devices and sufficiency of the teaching materials in schools effect the usage of printeded materials, audiovisual materials or experience-giving methods (e.g. field trips, a visit to an institution) in social studies lessons. The data were collected from 160 teachers (N=87, female; N=73, male) who worked in Istanbul and Sakarya during 2008-2009 spring semester. A scale was developed and applied by the researcher on the participating teachers to score and measure the usage of teaching materials in the Social Studies lessons. The results of the study showed statistically significant differences on the usage of printed materials and experience-giving methods based on the gender of the teacher and in service training, in favor of both female teachers and teachers who have received an in-service training. Moreover, statistically significant differences were also observed on the usage of print materials, experience-giving methods and the total score due to the service length of the teacher. The teachers, who have been working for 16-years or more, had significantly higher scores on the aforementioned variables. In addition, it was found that if schools had sufficient materials/equipment, the teachers tended to use the teaching materials more in their lessons. No correlation was found between the service length and the usage of audiovisual materials by teachers, as well as between having a personal computer and usage of teaching materials.

The aim of this paper is to find out preschool teacher educators' opinions on foreign language education at preschool. The opinions of a preschool teacher educator at a state university and a teacher at a preschool in a private institution were obtained through structured and semi structured interviews. The opinions were then coded and categorized. The emerging categories were the effects of foreign language education on children's mental development, the age to start foreign language education, teachers of foreign language, and ways of teaching foreign language to preschoolers. The participants agreed on the beneficial effects of foreign language education at early ages, methods of teaching, and the qualities of teachers. However, they differed in the appropriate age to start foreign language education. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. <title>A Model for Explaining Student Achievement in Social Studies Course</title>

<description>A Model for Explaining Student Achievement in Social Studies Course
Çalışkan, Hüseyin; Uzunkol, Ebru
This study is aimed at showing how learning styles and strategies of elementary and middle school students taking a Social Studies course are explained, along with their attitudes towards the course, and their achievement during the course. The study group consisted of 320 students (172 female and 148 male) attending elementary and middle schools in Turkey "The Learning Styles Scale", "The Learning Strategies Scale" and "The Attitude Scale for the Social Studies Course" were used for data collection, while "report card grades" were used for determining the achievement level in the Social Studies course. Within the framework of variables, a basic model was tested by means of path analysis included in the structural equation modeling. It was concluded that the variables learning styles, learning strategies, and attitudes towards the course collectively explained positively the achievement of students in the course.

Basalt based glass-ceramics were prepared by conventional melt-quenching technique and subsequently converted to glass-ceramics by a controlled nucleation and crystallization process. Glass materials were obtained by melt at 1500 degrees C and quenched in cold water. The powder materials were made by milling and spin coating. The powders were applied on the 430 stainless steel interconnector material, and heat treatment was carried out. The interface characteristics between the glass-ceramic layer and interconnector were investigated by using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the basalt base glass-ceramic sealant material exhibited promising properties to use for SOFC.
